Golf Gift Vouchers vs a Golf Gift Box: Which Is Better?

An honest comparison of golf gift vouchers and golf gift boxes, including when a voucher really is the better buy.

A gift voucher is the safest golf gift you can buy. It is also the one most likely to sit in a drawer until someone remembers it in March.

We sell golf gift boxes, so we are not neutral here. But we also think the voucher is the right answer more often than most gift guides admit, and we would rather you bought the thing that actually gets used. Here is the honest comparison.

What a gift voucher does well

It removes every guess. Size, brand, ball model, glove hand, whether they already own three rangefinders — none of it matters. They choose.

It also scales to any budget without looking cheap in the way a small physical gift sometimes can. A £20 voucher is a £20 voucher. A £20 object has to work hard.

And for a golfer who is genuinely particular — someone who plays one ball model and will not switch, or who has strong views about grips — a voucher respects that. Buying around a fussy golfer usually ends in a polite thank you and a quiet return.

Where vouchers fall down

Three things, mostly.

There is nothing to open. If the gift is being handed over in front of people — a birthday, Christmas morning, a leaving do — an envelope is a flat moment. That matters more than people like to admit.

Then there is the admin you have handed them. A voucher is not a gift so much as a task: log in, browse, pick, pay the difference, wait for delivery. Plenty of vouchers die at step two.

Finally, a voucher says nothing about you. Part of the point of a gift is the evidence that someone thought about it. Credit at a golf shop shows you remembered they play golf, which they already knew.

When we would tell you to buy the voucher

Buy the voucher if they are saving towards something specific. If your husband has been talking about a new driver since February, a box of balls and a glove is not what he wants, however good it is. Put the money towards the club.

Buy the voucher if they are a low-handicap player with settled preferences. These golfers know exactly what they play and why.

Buy the voucher if you are genuinely stuck for time and posting is not an option — though if the issue is timing rather than information, our Christmas delivery page is worth a look before you give up on a physical gift.

When a box is the better call

A box wins when the recipient plays golf but is not precious about kit, which covers most club golfers and almost every beginner. Balls, tees, a glove and a cap get used regardless of brand loyalty, because they are consumables.

It also wins whenever the gift has to be handed over in person. There is a reason nobody films someone opening a gift card.

Ours come in three sizes — Members at £28, Captains at £54 and Presidential at £94 — and they are hand-packed here in the UK in premium packaging, so they arrive ready to give rather than ready to wrap. The Presidential has a guaranteed contents list: twelve premium tour-level A-grade golf balls, a tour-standard glove, a premium brand cap, a driver headcover or triple headcover set, at least two ball markers, 100 bamboo tees and a bag of sherbet lemons. If you want to see how the three compare before choosing, we have a comparison page for that.

Every box includes a glove, and you pick the size and hand at checkout. Worth knowing: the glove goes on the lead hand, which is the opposite hand to the one they play with. A right-handed golfer wears a left-hand glove. Most adult men take Medium.

The middle ground most people miss

If the appeal of a voucher is the choice, but the problem is the empty envelope, there is a third option: choose the contents yourself and have it arrive as a gift.

That is what build your own golf gift box is for. It starts at £24 and you pick every item — six or twelve golf balls in Standard, Premium or Collector grades, a glove, a cap, a headcover, bonus items, and personalised extras such as bag tags, towels, scorecard holders and ball markers. We hand-pack it from there.

It takes about as long as buying a voucher and solves the thing a voucher cannot.

Common questions

Do golf gift vouchers expire?

Often, yes, and the terms vary a lot between retailers. Check the expiry and any exclusions before you buy, particularly whether the voucher can be used on sale items or only at full price. This is the detail that catches people out.

How much should a golf voucher be for?

Enough to buy something whole. A voucher that covers part of a purchase makes the recipient top it up, which turns your gift into a contribution. If your budget will not cover a complete item in the category they care about, a physical gift at the same price usually lands better.

What if I do not know their glove size?

Medium covers most adult men, and our glove size guide walks through measuring properly if you can get near their hand. If you cannot find out and the gift hinges on fit, that is a fair reason to lean towards a voucher.

Should I just buy from a big golf retailer instead?

Sometimes, and we will say so. If they want clubs, shoes, a trolley or anything that has to be fitted or tried on, a large retailer with a wide catalogue is the right place and a voucher is the right format. We are better at the consumables and the giving moment than at kit that needs measuring.

So, which one

If they know exactly what they want, buy the voucher and do not feel bad about it. If they play golf and would be pleased by useful kit arriving in a box, buy the box.

Our three boxes have over 350 verified Judge.me reviews averaging 4.6, and you can read them on our reviews page. UK orders go out on Royal Mail Tracked 48 with free UK delivery over £100, and EU and international options are at checkout — timings and details are on our shipping policy page.
