The Tour Championship: Hovland One Shot Away from History
Viktor Hovland takes a one-shot lead into today's final round of the 2026 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. At stake is $10 million! The largest single tournament payout in the sport. Further, the FedExCup title which comes with a five-year PGA Tour exemption.
Hovland has been the story of the week. He opened with a 6-under 64 on Thursday, making 141 feet and 3 inches of putts (nearly double his season average) to move into contention behind first-round leader Min Woo Lee. He followed that with a 66 on Friday, then a 65 on Saturday, finishing with six consecutive putts of 7 feet or longer, four of them for birdie, to take a one-shot lead into the final round at 15 under par.
The man breathing down his neck is Ryan Gerard. The Tour Championship newcomer has been bogey-free for stretches and sits at 14 under, one back. Scottie Scheffler, Adam Scott and Ludvig Aberg are all at 12 under. Very much in the conversation.
Adam Scott at 46 years old deserves a paragraph of his own. The oldest player in the field opened with a 66 and has been one of the most consistent performers of the week. He is playing in what could be one of the final chapters of a remarkable career, and doing it on golf's biggest stage.
What makes this week particularly interesting is the format change. The Tour Championship no longer uses starting strokes. Now it is four rounds of stroke play. Lowest score wins. That means whoever lifts the trophy today will have genuinely earned it across 72 holes.
Hovland's comments after Saturday were pointed. Asked whether he would call himself the Tour Championship winner or the FedExCup champion if he wins today, he did not hesitate: "Tour Championship winner," he said. It is a revealing comment about where the debate around professional golf's season-long structure currently sits.
He has won from this position before. In 2023 he claimed the Tour Championship at East Lake in dominant fashion. He has converted 5 of his 6 54-hole leads on Tour into victories. Today he goes for his ninth career PGA Tour win.
Min Woo Lee Announces Himself on the Biggest Stage
In his first ever Tour Championship appearance, Min Woo Lee fired an 8-under 62 in the opening round. This ties the lowest round of his PGA Tour career and matches the East Lake course record. He led the field after Thursday and has been one of the most watchable players of the week.
Lee has slipped back since that stunning opener but this week has shown exactly the player he is becoming. Making your Tour Championship debut with a 62 is a statement. Expect to see a lot more of him in these surroundings.
LIV Golf Has Found a Lifeline
LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil announced this week that the league has a signed agreement in place with a new lead investor. The identity of the investor has not been disclosed, but O'Neil confirmed the deal has been approved by the LIV board and is expected to close in September.
The announcement comes after months of serious uncertainty. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which has bankrolled the league since its launch in 2022, confirmed earlier this year that its funding would end after the 2026 season. Reports of a possible bankruptcy filing followed. The Team Championship event planned for later this month in Michigan was quietly dropped.
The new structure will see players become majority equity holders in the league. A significant shift that O'Neil described as "a first for a major global sports league." Plans suggest LIV will return in 2027 with 10 events, five in the US and five internationally.
Whether this resolves LIV's long-term questions or simply delays them remains to be seen. But for now, the league lives on.

Today's Tour Championship final round at East Lake is the only thing that matters in professional golf right now. Hovland and Gerard in the final pairing, Scheffler lurking three back, Adam Scott making a case for one more chapter. Switch it on.
